Overview

Our Wicklow day tour is designed to give you an experience like no other. We take a route up past the Blessington Lakes, where you will see the lush green fields of arable land before stopping at Baltinglass Abbey, dating back to the 1100s. We then visit a working farm where you get to experience what life is like for the rural farmer. Ed and his trusty dog will give you a sheepdog demonstration and explain the workings of this diverse farm populated by sheep, cattle, pigs and of course, his five working dogs. We continue on to a fantastic lunch destination in the Glenmalure Valley.

We then visit what for many will be the highlight of the tour – Glendalough. The Glendalough monastery was founded in the 6th century, but most of the buildings there today date from the late 10th century to the 12th century. The round tower and the Cathedral are particularly impressive. The setting is what makes this monastic site stand out above all others and you have an hour and a half to explore the surrounding area, breathtaking views and the lakes.

The sights and experiences on this tour are fantastic and we know that our knowledgeable, entertaining guides will make this Wicklow day tour one of the most memorable days of your trip to Ireland!

Itinerary

08:30 am: DEPART DUBLIN

The tour departs from the Molly Malone statue Suffolk street at 08.30 (Please arrive 10 minutes before departure time)

10:00 am: BALTINGLASS ABBEY

Our first stop of the day is Baltinglass. You have half an hour to explore Baltinglass Abbey, which was founded in 1148 by Dermot MacMurrough, the King of Leinster. Its twelve arches are a particularly interesting architectural feature, but there is much more to explore and discover. Grab a coffee and back on the bus.

10:45 am: WORKING SHEEP FARM

We drive up the road to a working farm in the heartland of the arable side of Wicklow. Meet the friendly local farmer Ed who will delight in introducing you to rural life on the farm. He will show you the different breeds of bulls, and introduce you to his herd of cows and their calves, before giving a sheepdog demonstration - corralling the sheep with little more than a few commands or whistles. This is a truly unique experience and gives you a great insight to life in rural Ireland.

1:00 pm: LARAGH VILLAGE

We travel along the Wicklow way to the scenic village of Laragh.

2:15 pm: GLENDALOUGH

Arriving at Glendalough in the afternoon has distinct advantages as most tours come here in the morning. You have an hour and a half to explore this interesting Abbey and the surrounding lakes. The Monastery itself was founded in the 6th century by St. Kevin, but most of the buildings date from between the 11th and 12th century. Glendalough monastery has many buildings; the tower and St Kevin’s Kitchen are the most complete all the rest are in disrepair to differing extents. The setting amongst the mountains and the lakes is what sets this monastery apart from every other. Take a stroll and enjoy this magical place, you will be transported to a tranquil peaceful place.
